QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS (FAQ's)

QUESTION - What is Individual Counseling?
ANSWER - People come to Individual Counseling to talk one-on--one about different aspects of their lives. Individual Therapy provides a safe environment for sharing one's deepest thoughts and feelings without judgment. It is a powerful setting in which to disclose secrets, emotions and experiences that may be difficult to discuss.

The Individual Therapist will explore feelings and behaviors, relationships with others, and choices and decisions in both the past and present. Individual Counseling weaves past stories, events, feelings and traumas, with current emotions, patterns, stressors and events, enabling clients to integrate the past with the present. The direct, active and personal nature of Individual Therapy encourages self-understanding, growth and empowerment.

QUESTION - Why should I consider Individual Counseling?
ANSWER - Individual Therapy focuses on improving symptoms that may be interfering with functioning in one or more areas of life, including family, social, career, education, etc. Individual Therapy provides techniques and guidance to increase awareness and the capacity for self-observation, change behavior and beliefs, and strengthen insight and empathy in an atmosphere of safety and acceptance. These changes result in healthier perceptions, healed wounds, and better choices, increasing the sense of well-being, ability to manage stress, and experience of an enriched life and relationships.

QUESTION - Who should attend Individual Counseling?
ANSWER - Individual Counseling by its nature is one-on-one. This obvious answer, however, is not as simple as it may seem. There are many instances when bringing a partner or spouse, child, parent, or friend may be beneficial to the process. The benefit of others attending usually becomes clear as Individual Therapy progresses.

QUESTION - How long will Individual Counseling take?
ANSWER - The goals, frequency, and duration of Individual Therapy will vary according to individual needs and response to treatment. Therapy may be short-term or long-term, depending upon the depth of a client's desire to become mentally and emotionally healthier, both personally and in relationships.

QUESTION - How will I know when our Indianapolis individual therapy is done?
ANSWER - Therapy may be considered complete when the goals of Individual Therapy are reached. Generally, the therapist measures this by how well the symptoms have subsided for a stable period of time and when functioning is healthier with peers and adults at home, work, and in social activities.

At the end of therapy, the therapist will take the opportunity to say goodbye by offering her thoughts, feelings and words of hope and encouragement for the future.
